Bulletproof coffee is a high-calorie coffee that combines black coffee with MCT oil or coconut oil, and grass-fed butter or ghee. While many think Bulletproof coffee is a modern creation, a similar drink called butter coffee has been made for centuries.

Since people living in high altitudes require substantially more calories, it is common practice to add butter to coffee and tea in order to consume more calories. You can think of butter coffee as a D-I-Y type of Bulletproof coffee as it includes unsalted butter and MCT oil or coconut oil and can easily be made at home. 

Bulletproof coffee is a trademark recipe created by Dave Asprey, who founded Upgrade Labs, authored four New York Times best selling books, and created the Bulletproof Diet. Through his own journey of weight loss and improved brain function, he started the wellness trend of biohacking.

While many of the ingredients of Bulletproof coffee have been extensively studied, there is nothing to support that the combination of these ingredients is more beneficial than just consuming the individual ingredients on their own.

To make the claims that Bulletproof coffee is a superfood that improves brain function, lowers the risk of heart disease, or improves blood pressure is not supported by the research at this time. 

However, there are some benefits to adding the ingredients of Bulletproof coffee to your morning coffee. As outlined above, MCT oil, grass-fed butter, coconut oil, and coffee all have certain health benefits that have been well researched. Let’s take a look at why drinking Bulletproof coffee may be a good idea for certain people. 

Can help you stay in ketosis or follow a low-carb diet. Bulletproof coffee first became popular for those following a ketogenic diet or a low-carb diet. Due to the high quality fats found in Bulletproof coffee, it can help you stay in ketosis.

Ketosis is a fat burning state in which the body uses stored fat for energy instead of carbohydrates.   1. Make 1 cup of regular coffee (using your preferred brewing method such as french press or drip coffee maker) – try to use organic coffee if possible
  2. Add 1-2 tablespoons of high quality MCT oil or coconut oil – organic if possible
  3. Add 1-2 tablespoons of grass-fed unsalted butter or ghee – organic if possible
  4. Put all ingredients into a regular blender and blend for about 20 seconds until foaming

For extra flavor, try these optional add-ins: 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, 1 drop of peppermint essential oil, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, or protein powder.
