Meditation supplies for the best meditation area

Best supplies to make sitting while meditating more comfortable

“Sit in a comfortable position,” the voice in the app or your meditation teacher says.

Even if it looks good on photos, not all of us can enjoy a meditation session sitting with legs fully crossed in a perfect Lotus position. And…you might have noticed that even the most comfortable sitting position becomes not so comfortable after a while.

Luckily, it is not mandatory to sit in a picture-perfect Lotus pose on flat ground in order to meditate. Let’s leave it to fully enlightened monks and experienced yogis. However, it is still important to find a meditation position that works best for you.

Here’s where the meditation supplies like pillows, cushions, mats and stools come into play. They are created to improve posture and therefore reduce the pain and ache that usually come with sitting still for a long period of time.

Do new workout clothes get you excited to hit the gym? The same applies when it comes to meditation. Having a meditation space and supplies that you use specifically for meditation can increase your motivation to actually START and keep going.

Zafu: Meditation cushion and meditation pillow

* Just a quick note: meditation cushion and pillow are synonyms, there is no differentiation between two of them. Feel free to use these terms interchangeably.

One of the most common meditation cushions is called Zafu. It is a round, relatively firm cushion, sewn from a heavy cloth and made specifically for mediation.

Zafu pillows originate from Japan and traditionally were filled with kapok, the fluffy fibers harvested of a rainforest tree called the Ceiba tree. Nowadays most Zafu will be filled with harder but more substantial buckwheat hulls. It will adjust to your body contours but won’t squish down too much.

Zafu pillow mostly is used by sitting with your backside on the pillow and legs crossed in front, touching the ground or a meditation mat that’s placed under the Zafu.

You can also try a kneeling position. Put Zafu under your backside, between the legs and place legs on both sides of the Zafu pillow in a kneeling position.

Now when you know the basics of how to use Zafu meditation pillow, let’s take a look at some of the options for these popular meditation cushions.

We made sure to select one of the most popular and highly rated Zafus online. All of these Zafu pillows have removable covers that can be easily washed and has a handle to make it convenient to carry around. The two important features to make sure your new meditation cushion lasts as long as possible and is easy to use.

Zabuton: Meditation mat

Meditation mat is another essential if you are looking to prepare the most comfortable meditation space that inspires you for those daily mindfulness sessions.

Zabuton is the most popular type of meditation mats. It is a flat, rectangular cushion, normally filled with cotton stuffing.

Zabuton mat is commonly used together with a Zafu meditation pillow or a meditation stool. It cushions your legs, knees, and ankles from hard floors during meditation. Zabuton is a lifesaver if your knees or ankles are more sensitive!

If you are planning on buying both Zafu pillow and Zabuton mat, check for sellers that are selling these meditation cushion sets. It will save you some hard-earned $$.

For some people just using a zabuton mat when meditating is enough. Maybe you feel comfortable sitting down for a prolonged period without a meditation pillow?

In that case, Zabuton mat can be a great option. You will have a comfortable surface to sit on and a designated place to meditate.

Meditation stool or meditation bench

Meditation stool or bench is a necessity for meditators that find it hard to sit cross-legged. Sitting on a bench lets you practice in a kneeling position called “seiza”.

To avoid pain in the knees, meditators often use Zabuton mat under the stool so that the knees are not directly touching the ground.

When choosing a meditation bench, think of how you will be using it.

If you are planning on carrying it around, go for a lightweight and foldable option. For meditation at home, choose a more sturdy, unfoldable bench as these tend to be more stable.
