Zafu: Meditation cushion and meditation pillow

* Just a quick note: meditation cushion and pillow are synonyms, there is no differentiation between two of them. Feel free to use these terms interchangeably.

One of the most common meditation cushions is called Zafu. It is a round, relatively firm cushion, sewn from a heavy cloth and made specifically for mediation.

Zafu pillows originate from Japan and traditionally were filled with kapok, the fluffy fibers harvested of a rainforest tree called the Ceiba tree. Nowadays most Zafu will be filled with harder but more substantial buckwheat hulls. It will adjust to your body contours but won’t squish down too much.

Zafu pillow mostly is used by sitting with your backside on the pillow and legs crossed in front, touching the ground or a meditation mat that’s placed under the Zafu.

You can also try a kneeling position. Put Zafu under your backside, between the legs and place legs on both sides of the Zafu pillow in a kneeling position.

Meditation stool or bench is a necessity for meditators that find it hard to sit cross-legged. Sitting on a bench lets you practice in a kneeling position called “seiza”.
